Video: What will you defend? - Singapore National Education / Total Defence TD25
Song Lyrics (Officer Cadet School Course):
We come from many places, all across the land.
Of many different races, together hand in hand.
United we stand, divided we fall.
Ready to serve our nation's call.
We come from OCS, we are the very best.
Leading with dignity and pride.
Whenever we go, we'll always know,
our spirit lives forever more.
Loyalty to the country, that's what we all believe.
To lead, excel and overcome,
is what we must achieve.
Forever strong and valiant,
we'll give our lives and more.
Never ceasing to serve Singapore.

What will i defend?
I will defend my country because if i do not have a proper country, i would not be able to have home or friends and family to defend.
I will defend my family, my home. My family members are always the one who are with me since the day i was born. I can talk to my family members if i have any problems.
I will defend my true friends. Friends would share my troubles and problems with me so that i would not be alone facing the problems that i have.
I agree with Marvin, as family is the thing that everyone would protect and like he said, without them, we would not be able to do what i am now lead such a life !

What will I defend?
I will defend my country, because I'm kind of a patriot and I love my country. And without my country, I wouldn't have a home or friends and family to defend.
I will defend my home, because I would rather sleep in a bed than the gutter, and I would actually like to sit down to eat breakfast in the morning.
And I will defend my friends and family, because without them I would not have anybody to rely on, and I would be rather lonely.
Also, I agree with Zi Li's post very much. Friends can't be taken for granted, and should be appreciated.

Who Will I Defend
I will choose to protect my family members. There are a few reasons. Firstly, I spend most of my time with my family. When I was young, they always shower me with care and buy lots of toy for me. Secondly, whenever I feel unhappy, I will confide to them and they always listen to me. I share happy and sad moments with them. Thirdly, they are the closest to me and teach me important life values to make me become a better person. They are the ones who correct me when I did something and reward when I did something good. So, I will definitely protect them in times of threat and crisis. Country and friends will come later.
I agree with Yi Song.
Family members will always be with you when you are troubled. They are very important in our lives as they guide us and motivate us, helping us to become a better person.

What Will I Defend? By Jeremy Teo
What will you defend.
I will defend my country. It is because without a country, there will not be a place where my family can live and that would mean that my family would need the country to survive. Having live in this place for so long, i could understand that this is my where my home is and i could not leave it. I believe that my parents would feel so as well.
Who will i defend?
Protecting my country is like protecting everyone living in that country. Including my family, friends and everybody living in Singapore. I would strive to protect and defend Singapore in times of threat or crisis.
2)I agree with Jeremy that we should defend, first of all, our family and relatives, as they are what means most to me. Because they have been with me all my life, and i care for them a lot. They love me as much as i love them, and they are the people that i can share just about anything with. But i must also state that i will still defend my country. Because defending the country means protecting everyone who lives there. Including all my family, relatives and friends.

I would protect my precious loved family members, faithful friends and my country, Singapore. My precious family members have showered countless amounts of love on me, and would always be there for me, supporting and helping me in my life. My parents has raised me from birth, feeding me with the best food, giving me a comfort and safe zone, and protecting me from dangers. They are willing to spend their hard earned money on me, nuturing me. They teach me values and morals of life, and would forgive me when I am in wrong. They bring me joy, warmth and a comfortable life i enjoy. My faithful friends stand by me, keep me company and gives me happiness. We play together, spend time with one another, and go through many difficulties and achievements together. We complete tough tasks together, share the joy, and go through interesting adventures in life together. My country, Singapore, consists of my beloved family, friends and fellow citizens. My country helped me achieve many things in life, provided me with good education and living conditions. They protect me from threats, and allow me to have a mind of peace, without any worries. I do not have to worry about having not enough food, not being able to attend school or staying on the streets, as Singapore will aid me. I will protect them !
Reply To Pang Ren Zhu Post
What about your precious faithful and nice friends, who stay by your side and go through difficulties with you. What about the times you spent with them, and enjoyed adventures.
What will I defend?
I would probably defend my family. They have watched me grow up and are the closest to me. However, if it is possible, I will try my best to defend my country and my fellow men. I will fight for my country as it has been my home ever since I was born. If I fail to protect my country, I will protect as many people as I can. However, I will also defend myself as I believe everyone would fight for survival in times of crisis.

What i will hold most dear in life and protect and defend in times of threat or crisis?
What will I Defend?
What will I Defend?
Many people say that in the event of a crisis, they would defend their family, loved ones and such. However, in reality, some would rather selfishly defend themselves even if their loved ones were in a difficult situation. I, myself, also feel that way, and such, I will defend myself, anybody that is accompanying me during the crisis, and (if possible) my family.
Why do I say that defending yourself is important? That is because, if you care much about others around you, you will neglect yourself, and that would be harming yourself. Although your loved ones are happy to see that you want to defend them during the crisis, they would be able to see that you are hurting yourself in the process, thus worrying more. In a worse situation, you could overstress yourself which can lead to illness, and which other people would have to take care of you, which causes even more stress to the people. So, in order not to add on to the burden of my loved ones, I would firstly take care of myself, and if I am capable, then help the people around me.
Treating the people who are following you during the crisis is also important, as they are able to encourage you whenever you feel like giving up. This motivation is needed during a crisis so that people will not succumb to suicide to end the misery. If disputes happen, it will cause a extra weight of stress onto the survivor which will lead to illness and such.
Of course family is the main priority of a person as it is the main source of comfort and peace. However, many fail to defend it. At the start, people are determined to protect their family no matter what the costs are, but, at the critical moment, they will panic and defend themselves instead of his/her weak family. In my point of view, family is the most important thing to protect, and it is also the hardest to protect. It is also the main source of motivation (other than the other people accompanying you during the crisis) and could really boost your confidence in surviving. Saying, "I will definitely defend my parents, friends and country" is pretty easy, but is doing it the same?
Response to Bosco's post:
You said that, "There is actually not much choice of defending who you want because we are all boys and if war broke out all of us have to go to war and protect the country and its people so there is not much choice for us to make." But in actual fact, some people, who are cowards, run away on the battlefield to defend themselves rather than the country. This is a choice that they made, which is to defend themselves rather than the country.
What will i defend?
I will defend my family, relatives and my friends.
Firstly, I would defend my family, as they are always the one who are with me since I was born. They are the ones that are always supporting me and encouraging me. They made a very huge impact on my life. My parents are the ones that raised me up while my siblings bring joy to me.
Secondly, I would defend my friends. They care for me and I would share my problems with them. They would try their best to help me and they are always there when you need help. They also bring joy to me.
Finally, I would defend my relatives as they are those who are surrounding me and they are part of the family.
Comment on Wai Qun’s post:
I agree with Wai Qun as if we are not able to defend ourselves, how are we able to defend others. It is also right that we should defend our family as life would be meaningless without them.

What Will You Defend?
I will defend my family, my friends and others who care for me.
My family. They are always there for me to support me and encourage me. To catch me when I fall, to get me back on my feet, to love and care for me. I think family is the most important thing hence I would want to defend them first.
My friends. They would share my troubles and problems and lend me a ear when I need someone to talk to and lend a hand when I need help. I have some really good friends who I confide in and I’m sure I’ll need them in the future.
Others who care for me. Perhaps my relatives or people I might not know who care for me it might be the world it might be just one but I’m still going to defend them.PS This account belongs to Gerald Lau 2A 17, who is posting on behalf of Brendan as his GMail account has a problem

There is actually not much choice of defending who you want because we are all boys and if war broke out all of us have to go to war and protect the country and its people so there is not much choice for us to make. In the end I still want to protect my friends, family and country cause this are the essential things in life that make me feel comfortable cause i cannot imagine myself going to school without laughter and going back to a house without anyone.

I agree that without friends or family life would not be as nice as it is now, without them I would feel lonely all the day and everyday and no one can help me with my maths problems.
What will i defend....
My friends had also supported me and help me when I am in need. The bond I have between some of my friends are as close as brothers, therefore I wil protect them.
The country is the one which I had been brought up in and educated. I must be loyal to the country and defend it when in crisis.
What will I defend ?
Response to Marvin's post
I agree that family is most important as they have led you and raised you throughout your your life and without them life would be much harder then it would be at the time of crisis.
What will I defend ?
I would definitely defend my family and if possible, my closest friends. Life without family or friends would be very dull and maybe pointless as they are the people who make life fun and enjoyable. Our family are the people who lead you and friends are the people who make life exciting outside when you are away from your family. Both groups are as important to me.
What Will I Defend?
I will defend my family members, relatives and friends. These are the people that i mean the most to me. These are the people that i need support from before i grow up to be an adult. Without these people, my life would be joyless, unhappy and lonely. But of course, if i could, i would also protect my neighbours, and people living in my estate too. These people also deserve to be protected because they are my surroundings.
Comment on Ming Xuan's point of view:
I strongly agree with Ming Xuan. Everyone has a family, and our families are the ones that affect our lives the most. Our family members are the ones that are with us the whole of our lives and even though they will leave us in the future, we should cherish every second with them when they are alive. Our families are the ones that are supporting us when we are not independent yet. When we become independent when the are alive, it is our priority to protect them and support them like how they support us when we were young. So all of us should become independent as quick as possible so we can repay our family members by taking care and protecting them.
What will I defend
I am Malcolm Wu, Index number 21.
Although our top priority is to protect our family and friends, I believe that we should not only protect them but protect the citizens of Singapore. Singapore is not only made up my family and friends. We cannot be too selfish to think only about ourselves but the welfare of everyone in Singapore. That is how we should lead our lives in the first place. Yes, of course, family and friends mean everything to you and defending them is what we all should and will do but if the citizens of Singapore all could protect one another, that is the best solution all of us would be looking for in times of crisis. Our country is too small to let us only care about our families and friends. We have a small, growing population and therefore we should all protect each other to ensure our growing population to turn into a big one.
Comment on Justin point of View:
I believe Justin made a lot of sense when he said that he had to protect himself, not out of selfishness but for the sake of his family and friends so that he can protect them, especially his younger siblings. Protecting people dear to you would definitely be the option everyone would take.
What do I hold most dear in life such that I would strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis?
I am Ng Ming Xuan(25), from Secondary 2 Aloysius.
I will agree with Farhan’s post on the issue that ‘friends bring joy to one’s life, supporting us when we are down’. Friends are the ones that we often hang out with, talk about our special interests, sharing fashionable items, gather for a outing to explore new things and to confide in with some issues that we might feel uncomfortable telling our parents. Friends are requisite to us as they too, does not make us feel rejected and are out there to reach out to us.
What will I hold most dear in life that I would strive to protect in times of threat and crisis? It will be my family. They made a strong impact on my life. They love and care for me in their own ways and always being there whenever I faced difficulties, not letting me feel despair. The experiences and moral values that they share with me, prevent me from going astray, makes me unique and be an upright person. The period of time that they brought me up is not effortless as well. Thus, I will protect my family well-being and treasure what I have with them.
What Will I Defend?
Of course if you were to ask me what i would defend, it would most likely be my family and the people who are close to me but as far as possible, i would most certainly want to protect my country as it is where i am living in right now and where i was born in too. Protecting family and friends would be the least i could defend as they are the people i love and my parents are the ones who brought me up and into this world.

What will you defend?
1. What do you hold most dear in life such that you would strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis?
Firstly, I will defend myself first if not I will not be able to defend others. Next, I will defend my family. They were the one who raised me and provide me with happiness and joy through my childhood. They will bring me to the doctor when I am ill. They will be there for me when problems and burdens are piling up and share it with me. Lastly, I will defend my friends. We work together, play with one another, and talk to each other. In times of crisis, my friends will be there to lend me a hand, comfort me and encouraged me. In a nutshell, I will strive to protect and defend what I cherish. I will not think so far as to defend the country because I do not have this kind of ability at this point in time.
2. For the above question, state three different aspects and include in your responses, why you think these specific aspects are important to you.
Reply to Matthew Kwok’s Blog Entry: I agree with Matthew that we should protect our family and friends. WHAT WILL I DEFEND
I agree that family is important and worth protecting as we grew up with them till maturity meaning that the Family bonds between them and us are a link to our beginning and a guide to our future as they will guide you to the correct path and not go astray to the path of condemnation
A sense of belonging is derived from the strong bond of family. The roots are planted deeply as we have the strong bonds that connects all of us together
What do you hold most dear in life that you would strive to protect and defend in times of crisis?
I am Matthew Kwok.
I will protect my family and friends.
We can always trust our family members. When we have a trouble and we need some help, we will turn to our family members.
Friends make life fun and interesting and they also provide support and advice when we need it. Receiving support from a friend makes us feel like we have someone there for us.
Comment of Sean's post:
Family bonds are a link to our beginning and a guide to our future. Early influences are fundamental to our individual development.
We all want to "belong" and feel accepted. A sense of belonging is derived from the strong bond of family. Family is where our roots take hold and from there we grow.
What do you hold most dear in life such that you would strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis?
I would like to discuss about Bryan's view.
I would, to a larger extent, agree with him because family and loved ones of a person means a lot to the person. Without them, the person will be very lonely, if he does not have friends.
However, to a smaller extent, I disagree with him because we cannot just throw our country's and community's safety. As the Singapore Pledge states 'to build a democratic society, based on justice and equality'. This shows that we have to treat everyone equally.
In times of crises, I would hold my country, my fellow Singaporeans and the Singapore government. I will also defend my family and loved ones if possible. This is due to the fact that Singapore has given us so much benefits such as a good education, opportunities to learn, safety and security and even her life. We have to repay our benefactors and have to defend our country in times of crises. We cannot depend on others, just as Singapore cannot depend on the British during World War II against Japan. Therefore, we must defend our country, our people and the government in times of crises.

What do you hold most dear in life such that you would strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis?
To me, the first thing that hold most dear in my life such that i would strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis is my family. These are the few aspects: Firstly, I love my family and i would not want anyone in my family to get hurt. Secondly, my family would show concern to me and they would use various ways to express their love for me, and this is the type of love that is priceless. Therefore, i can use my love to repay them. Thirdly, it is due to the fact that they are the closest to me and we would trust them no matter what. Family members like our members would also impart life skills to us to make us a better person. They are the one who will give you mental and physical support and they would be behind us no matter what happens. Country and friends would come later.
Reply to Matthew's Post:
I agree with Matthew about defending his family. However, i do not agree with one of the aspects: "who else if not they buy you this and help you survive." I think they are the one's who would give us support. They are the one's who love us and their love for us will never change. They would also teach us life skills on how to be a better person in future. No parent's would want their children to grow up to be a bad person. Therefore i do not think that they help us to survive.

Advantages and Disaadvantages of CCTV Cameras
The dis-advantages:The CCTV Camera system may use up too much electricity thus having a need to raise tax on people. Some people would not be happy to pay for something extra which they do not want it in the first place and this would cause a big problem for the government to handle. The monitoring system will invade into people's privacy which are not liked by the people. The CCTV may not be 100% full proof as people will invent or think of new ways to hack into the cameras system for bad doings.
This is all i have to say. Thanks
Advantages and Disadvantages of CCT Cameras
Installing security cameras provides officials with evidence that would not be available otherwise. For example, if there is a case of theft, the cameras would be able to show the evidence of the criminal activity. Installing security cameras also acts as a crime deterrent. For example, people are less likely to commit a crime if they know that are being monitored by surveillance cameras and would definitely be caught if they continue their crime act. Despite the various advantages of installing security cameras, there are nevertheless few disadvantages of installing these equipment. For example, the set-up and maintenance of these cameras may proved to be too costly for the buyers to afford. Some people may also find that these cameras can affect their privacy. For example, these people might know that the cameras are watching their every move and these may cause them to feel uncomfortable.
I think that Singapore should step up on CCT surveillance in light of the economic downturn and the increase in the number of crimes as these cameras may help the police in singapore to find traces of evidence of the criminal activity and better increase the rate of nabbing the criminal. Although the cameras may be a little expensive, i still think that setting up these cameras is worth it.
I think that these cameras may be a hindrance in my privacy as they can monitor my every move and these make me feel uncomfortable and they may effect my every action.

Advantages of having a CCTV
Comment on Darlyn's Post
Wednesday, June 24
good and bad points if the CCTV
Positive Points:
-Provides security
-24 hour surveillance on important places
-Aid in the capture of criminals and fighting of crime
-Provide evidence in crimes
-Discourages theft
-CCTV today often supervises industrial processes that take place under conditions too dangerous for humans
-Many cities and motorway networks have extensive traffic-monitoring systems, using closed-circuit television to detect congestion and notice accidents
-Bosses can also check on their employees in case they have been resting instead of working
- Monitoring the situation at home : maid, children, sick family members
Negative Points:
-CCTV cameras are intruding into people's privacy, as they are not surveying private, but public space, which goes against the publics rights
-CCTV’s are outnumbering people in countries such as the UK
-The ever-increasing number of CCTV’s aiding in the prevention of crime may lead to over-reliance
-Hackers and guerilla artists have exposed the vulnerabilities of the video systems in an act dubbed "video sniffing”, they have crossed feeds, uploaded their own video feeds and used the video footage for artistic purposes.
-Spraying substances over the lens can make the image too blurry to be read
-For wireless networks, broadcasting a signal at the same frequency of the CCTV network is reported to be able to jam it
-Laser pointers can temporarily blind cameras, and higher powered lasers can damage them

Blog Entry 1: What are the advantages of CCT surveillance?
With the increase in technology over the past years, there have been many new inventions like the CCT surveillance cameras. Are they a great help to our modern society or are they merely taking away every semblance of our privacy?
I believe that in this case, the pros outweigh the cons. With CCT surveillance, we are granted a greater sense of security. For example, if you are being stalked, you can use the cameras to find out who the stalker is, and give the tape over to the police for investigation. It would then be very, very important as evidence.
Also, it allows you to keep a greater watch on your home, even when you are not around. There have been cases of maids abusing children in recent years, and installing the cameras can certainly help to prevent or at least reduce the number of cases of the abuse of young children and the elderly by the maids. For example, there was a case where a maid was caught on tape abusing a two and a half year old child. Would this be possible without CCT surveillance?
It will also save on manpower. Instead of assigning a person to keep watch on a specific area, when he could be more productive elsewhere, I believe that using the CCT surveillance is a much better alternative. With such technology, a person can keep watch on various areas, rather than keeping watch on an area and potentially ruining the operation.
Of course, there have been many concerns and criticism like the lack of privacy it would cause, but in this case, is the need for privacy greater than our desire for security and safety? I don’t believe so.

Even though I agree with Gerald that the fact that the invasion of privacy is a major disadvantage due to the installation of the CCTV, I believe that this is more of a one-sided statement. From an ordinary people’s perspective, we may think that the installation of the CCTV is an invasion of privacy to our lives. However, from a police perspective, we may think that CCTV is an excellent detection toll. Nevertheless, it only helps some preplanned crimes and even then there are ways to thwart its effectiveness (i.e. Hats/Hoods). Therefore, neither the police nor the ordinary people are at fault as when there is gain, there will also be pain.

Installing a CCTV can have lots of benefits. The main reason why we install CCTV is due to several safety reasons. When we install CCTV, we will be able to avoid dealing with the thieves. The CCTV may also be used for traffic control to check the traffic condition on the roads. CCTV is most of the time use for identification after a theft or shoplifting. CCTV can also be used to monitor the actions of the children who are at home. Some CCTV is installed at the cash registers. This is a good way to keep track on transactions and those using the cash registers. Sometimes, it may be used to fight terrorism. Most importantly, it provides us a safer environment to live in. Lastly, it is about its versatility, it can be installed everywhere, making it a very useful tool.

I do not agree that ‘Most people feel that it is an invasion of privacy as they are conscious that a camera is watching their every move’. Even if near private housing, I think the owners of the houses were being asked if they want a camera installed around their estate. If you did not plan to do anything wrong in public, I believed you need not be conscious that a camera is watching you. CCTV cameras are usually installed at crowded public places and I do not think that people with social disorder will go to such places. I also believed that once a while the security guards will change the cameras so that the cameras could be in their best condition and records the best quality video.
THE ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF THE CCTV

Disadvantages of CCTV
A major disadvantage of CCTV is disregard of other's privacy. This should be avoided as much as possible and so the CCTV should only be activated when the need arises.

- Invasion Of Privacy
- Cause People to be Uneasy
- Must have adequate protection from both internet and physical damage

There are many advantages of putting CCT surveillance, like what Commissioner Ray Kelly from NYPD said in an interview that if people saw a sign on the camera that is from the police department it will not only prevent people from committing robbery during the night when there is very little human traffic but also it helps to lower the rate of terrorist attack as it would be seen by the police and would be easily captured. These cameras are also effective when needed in an investigation in tracking down the suspect, it was used in the latest summer subway bombing. The cameras also can be used during riots to keep the rioters under control and also during an assassination of a political figure police could use these cameras to find out what gun was used and where was it shot from, with all these details the culprit would be easier to be captured.
Putting CCT surveillance is a double-edge sword, there are also many disadvantages walking down the street seeing all those cameras could really scare someone with so many eyes looking at them. If Singapore ever wanted to install these many cameras they would need to consider the budget of the cameras if it was on 24/7 and the installation, it would cost a bomb. Also Singapore has to consider the manpower which would operate these cameras with so many cameras it will not be an easy job. FInally there will also not be any privacy, without privacy a typical Singaporean would write in to complain about the cameras and the company will need to get ready for lots of letters.
Well with those cameras in Chicago, the crime rate dropped by 16% if Singapore wants to put all these cameras its not up to us to decide as they would need to consider all the disadvantages and see if it is worth the money to install the cameras.
Well if the cameras are installed for the sake of the people's safety, i do not think people would mind if their privacy was taken away from them. Many would rather be safe than have privacy.

Advantages of CCT surveillance
Using the CCT surveillance, it could help to fight terrorism. If it is installed in public places, buses, or retail centers, it can help deter crimes, provide the police with leads, help citizens feel safer, and improve the economy of a crime-stricken area. House owners can also install one along the corridor to capture the loan sharks’ looks if they think the loan sharks have gotten the wrong address and splashes paint on the door. Digital recording is done 24/7. There are also different types of CCT surveillance that are suitable to install at certain places so that the it could capture the best image.

disadvantages of CCTV
Major disadvantage is invasion of someones privacy unless there are valid reasons behind implementing a CCTV solution i.e. for example deterring theft etc
Major advantages
- Prevention & deterrent for theft/crime
- Reduces stock losses hence increasing profitability (depending on its objective)
- Establishment of an anti fraud/crime culture
- Evidence for prosecution
- Great risk management tool
Major Disadvantages
- Data protection violation (have to ensure tapes are kept in a secure place)
- People might be uncomfortable being watched so will affect motivation, attitudes
- May cause people behaving in "controlled" ways
- Anyone from the internet can just hack into the CCTV system and turn the angle of the CCTV and a crime can happen in the other direction which the CCTV had been moved from.
To prevent that, the guard must be licensed if the area is to be monitored by the public.
To prevent invading someone else's privacy, it must be made sure that if the CCTV is moveable, the camera must not be facing any private houses or houses of people or offices as they have a right to keep their privacy to themselves.

Blog Entry 1: What are the advantages of CCT surveillance?
It is easier to amass evidence against irregularity because of the clarity of the images captured. Most of these wireless units have a high-resolution image that makes it very easy to identify features of the person. This makes the cameras ideal for the owner of the unit to easily monitor all activities within range of the cameras, and clearly note any suspicious behaviour, while getting a clear image of the person engaged in the activities.
It also does not take much effort to install the cameras. It is possible for the cameras to be placed exactly where they are needed to be, as oppose to having to compromise on the location just to give way to the positioning of the cables.
The last advantage is that it is not that expensive than most people would think. In fact, it is possible to purchase these types of cameras at a significantly less amount per unit than many of the wired counterparts on the market today. It is no wonder that more and more people are choosing to go wireless for their security camera needs as wireless units make for much easier installation.
